Épisode Le cartel de Mombasa S02E06 - The Blacklist Saison 2

L'action commence il y a 29 ans dans une ferme de famille à Koidu, en Sierra Leone. Une Range Rover arrive et six hommes armés descendent, à la recherche du patriarche Samwel Zuma. Après avoir, impitoyablement, tué la famille Zuma, les hommes saisissent le seul survivant, un garçon de six ans et partent avec lui.

De nos jours, dans une suite d’hôtel de luxe à Paris.  L'Américain Peter Kincaid présente un chariot de service de chambre à Joseph Batoula. Avec habileté, Kincaid étrangle Batoula jusqu’à ce que ce dernier perde conscience puis il l'étend, sous le chariot, il saisit un applicateur d'étiquette de bétail qu'il utilise pour fixer une marque à l'oreille de Batoula. Sur la côte du littoral de Kamtchtka, en Russie, quelques jours ou semaines plus tard : un vieil homme et un garçon découvrent le corps écorché de Batoula sur la plage.

Liz et Red parlent du cartel Mombasa. Red lui dit qu’ils ne sont pas de simples braconniers mais trafiquants qui ont opéré derrière un voile de secret impénétrable depuis le 19ème siècle. Liz pense qu’il sera difficile de convaincre le FBI jusqu’au moment où Red explique que le cartel de Monbasa est responsable de plusieurs milliards de dollars pour le prix du sang et que c’est important pour lui. Donc, Liz va voir Cooper pour lui expliquer que le cartel de Mombasa a tué le  dirigeant du Cartel de Wanjiku, Joseph Batoula. Liz s'écarte pour prendre un appel puis elle se rend sur un navire rouillé où un homme, appelons-le Samoan, est assommé. Ezra apparaît par la porte secrète de Liz avec une offre: "Voulez-vous le dire à Reddington où dois-je le faire ?". Pendant ce temps, Ressler tente d'obtenir une ordonnance pour ses médicaments. Bizarrement, nous nous rendons dans le ranch éloigné d’Igaluk, en Alaska, où une femme âgée, Skye Kincaid, félicite Matthieu, un homme exceptionnellement grand. Il a créé sa plus belle œuvre à ce jour, une taxidermie parfaite de Joseph Batoula.

Red organise un rendez-vous entre Liz et le milliardaire Geoff Perl, PDG de Deckerd Capital. Red explique la connexion ; lui et Perl partagent des intérêts communs, dont la protection des animaux en voie de disparition et Red finance les organismes de bienfaisance de Perl. Red dit à Liz de se préparer pour le soir mais il ne lui dit pas que la rencontre se déroulera dans un club et que Perl, qui ressemble remarquablement à Peter Fonda, est le batteur du groupe. Perl affirme que son organisation surveille le cartel de Mombasa depuis un moment mais ils n’ont jamais été en mesure de les incriminer. Il leur donne un nom, Lee Chung, qui travaille aux importations Emerson-Concorde. Après que Ressler lui est annoncé qu’il lui botterait les fesses s'il ne coopère pas, Chung admet l'importation d'espèces en voie de disparition mais jure qu'il ne sait rien à propos du  Mombasa Cartel. C’est à ce moment-là que le FBI découvre qu'un autre cadavre écorché, Alejandro Gomez, s'est échoué à Hokkaïdo. Ayant coincé Chung, Samar propose une nouvelle théorie : quelqu'un chasse les braconniers.

Liz appelle Ezra pour le remercier pour le sursis de 14 heures puis elle prend ses jumelles pour espionner la chambre du motel, juste en face de la sienne. Elle n'a pas dit à Red ce qui était derrière la porte secrète et Ezra ne lui a laissé aucun choix. Liz regarde le SWAT faire irruption dans la chambre d’Ezra et l'arrêter. Retour en Alaska, Peter Kincaid va voir Skye, qui l’informe que son père a appelé et qu’il a trouvé un autre "ami" pour Matthieu. Peter est en colère. Il prend tous les risques, effectue tous les enlèvements, tandis que  les autres restent assis. Skye le frappe gifle pour lui rappeler une chose : ils sont une famille et tout le monde fait sa part. Peter doit être fier de capturer les braconniers identifiés par son père. En un clin d'œil, Skye s’adoucit, caressant la joue de Peter, il est son rocher. Pendant ce temps, Red se présente sous le nom de Kenneth, au propriétaire du camion de nourriture, Zoe.

Aram et Samar ont analysé les données et déduisent que les deux cadavres écorchés ont été jettés près de Sitka, en Alaska, qui est l'ancienne maison du réseau souterrain des animaux, un groupe militant des droits des animaux. En 1971, leur chef Timothy Carlyle et six autres ont été reconnus coupables d'avoir tué des braconniers et sont aujourd’hui connus sous le nom de Sitka Seven. Cooper dit à Ressler d’aller à Sitka et de relâcher Chung.

Liz est dans le salon de Red quand les nouvelles de l'arrestation d’Ezra sont diffusées à la télé avec ses liens avec Red. Red insiste, Liz lui cache quelque chose, sinon pourquoi risquer sa capture ? Retour dans le ranch d’Igaluk où Skye aide son imposant bébé, Matthew, à sortir de la baignoire. Ressler arrive à Sitka. Il casse son pouce dans une portière de sa voiture pour obtenir les médicaments dont il a besoin et répond à un appel de Liz qui lui apprend que Chung a disparu. Elle envoie Ressler au ranch Igaluk qui appartient à Wendigo LLC et peut être connecté aux braconniers  ; alors Aram recherche une connexion en vol. Les deux hommes écorchés ont été transportés à Sitka alors qu'ils étaient encore en vie. Ressler rencontre Skye et Peter. Skye affirme que seule elle et Peter vivent sur la propriété. Lorsque Ressler jette un coup d'oeil à la cargaison humaine recouverte à l'arrière du quad de Peter, Peter l'assomme.

Aram trouve un mauvais contact pour Wendigo LLC donc Liz appelle Red car Ressler ne répond pas. Ressler se réveille dans une cage face Chung. Les deux hommes arborant des étiquettes d'animaux sur une oreille. Il y a de la musique assourdissante et ce qu'ils ne peuvent pas voir, c’est que Peter laisse Matthew aller à "la chasse". Soudain, les portes des cages s’ouvrent et Chung s’enfuit. Ressler réussit à l'arrêter puis cherche ses médicaments, qui ont disparu. Chung accuse immédiatement Ressler d'être un junkie, juste avant de succomber à la flèche de Matthew. Matthiew commence à hurler comme un loup et Ressler s’enfuit. Skye appelle Perl qui est prêt à tout pour Matthew. La mère protectrice ne sait pas que Red se tient au milieu du salon de Perl.

Liz et Samar arrivent au ranch avec une équipe du SWAT, ignorant que Matthew chasse Ressler à travers les bois. Il fait sombre quand Ressler arrive à un feu de camp, peuplé par la taxidermie humaine de Matthew. Pendant que Red se confronte à Perl qui prétend qu'il s’agit simplement d’une chasse des pires braconniers du monde. Red a finalement relié Wendigo LLC au cartel de Mombasa. Même Red ne peut pas comprendre le cheminement moral de Perl . Perl affirme qu'il est toujours le même écologiste et en même temps, il est un homme d'affaires,  il gère juste la situation à ses propres fins. Red lui laisse le choix, soit Perl meurt maintenant, soit il lui donne une liste de toutes les personnes associées au cartel de Mombasa. Retour dans les bois de l'Alaska, Matthew rejoint le feu de camp où Ressler se fait passer pour un des morts. Remarquant la main tremblante de Ressler, Matthew attaque avec son couteau. Après un combat, Ressler poignarde Matthew dans l'intestin et Matthew prend la fuite. Skye prépare déjà son bain, quand Liz, Samar et l'équipe de SWAT descendent sur la maison familiale. Blessé, Matthew apparaît devant la baignoire et les cris de Skye mettent l'équipe de SWAT en marche. Liz rentre dans la salle de bain juste à temps pour voir Skye jeter une plaque électrique dans la baignoire afin d'électrocuter son fils bien-aimé.

Red prend la clef USB de Perl puis il lui raconte l'histoire de Dembe Zuma, qu'il trouva à l'âge de 14 ans, enchaîné au mur d'une maison close de Nairobi. Dembe tente d'empêcher Red de tuer Perl mais il ne peut pas s’opposer à la détermination d'un père. On voit ensuite Red se rendre au camion alimentaire de Zoé. Liz met la main sur les médicaments de Ressler et  le trouve sanglotant à l'arrière d'une ambulance. On retrouve ensuite Liz sur le navire abandonné au côté du Samoan. Elle ouvre la porte secrète et se retrouve face à Tom, enchainé…

RED : Not poachers, Lizzy – traffickers. The poor devils who do the killing are the smallest of cogs in a very large machine. And the Mombasa Cartel is the worst of the lot. They operate behind an impenetrable veil of secrecy, enforced by brute terror and a rat’s nest of corporate fronts. Subsidiaries of shells inside numbered accounts.
LIZ : This is going to take some convincing. The FBI’s job is to protect people.
RED : Granted. Let’s forget about the animals for a moment The wholesale extinctions, the impact on the environment. Let’s just consider the human toll. The thorough corruption of local authorities, political assassinations, the massacres of entire villages and wildlife compounds. Eradicated for the most base of all possible motives: Profit. Hundreds of billions of dollars a year in blood money – human blood money.
LIZ : This is important to you.

Red seems touched and does not answer at once

RED : Someday the creatures on that program will be akin to unicorns and griffins – A fairy-tale bestiary written in past tense, and no one is lifting a finger to stop it. Why not, Lizzy? Why not us?

LIZ : Over the last few years, high-ranking poachers have disappeared without a trace from the Jalloh and Yeboah clans, the Bholas in India, and the Rocha Cartel in Bolivia. Now, no one’s taken credit yet, but according to Reddington, the Mombasa Cartel is working to corner the illegal wildlife trade.

RESSLER : Sorry.
LIZ : Four days ago, a dead body washed up south of Petropavlovsk on the Kamchatka Peninsula. Flayed and skinned with surgical precision, according to the local medical examiner.
COOPER : Does the victim have a name?
LIZ : Joseph Batouala – Kenyan, part of the Wanjiku Cartel, the alleged mastermind behind the 2013 elephant massacre at Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. The park’s watering holes were dosed with cyanide, killing 300 elephants and thousands of other animals.
COOPER : And this is the work of our victim?
SAMAR : Victims. High-ranking officials from half a dozen other cartels have also disappeared.
LIZ : According to Reddington, these gangs are just small fish in a very big pond. By far, the most destructive is the Mombasa Cartel.

RESSLER : Where was Batouala last seen alive?

RESSLER : Paris. And yet his body washes ashore on the Russian coast?

LIZ : Nothing. You were late to work again. You seem a little edgy.
RESSLER : I’m fine. Thanks, Mom.

LIZ : Chung’s business specializes in the importation of game meats and animal parts from endangered species.

RESSLER : He’s willing to roll over on everyone else but claims he doesn’t know anything about the Mombasa Cartel.
COOPER : You show him the contraband customs had tagged in his warehouse?
LIZ : Yeah. And the estimated fees Aram worked up.
ARAM : It’s a lot.
RESSLER : Plus 112 charges pending.
COOPER : And that didn’t rattle him?

ARAM : Whoa, oh, flag up. Looks like we got another one. Pulled up this morning in a fisherman’s net in Hokkaido, Japan. – same M.O, skinned. A local M.E. I.D.’d him from the serial numbers found on an artificial hip Alejandro Gomez, Bolivian.
LIZ : Rocha Cartel?
ARAM : According to Bolivian police and WCS, rumors are that Gomez worked for –
SAMAR : The Mombasa Cartel. Chung broke. It turns out our original victim was not with the Wanjiku Cartel. He defected a year ago to the Mombasas.
LIZ : Somebody’s poaching the poachers.

SAMAR : What about Chung?
COOPER : Cut him loose. Put a tail on him and see where he leads us. Ressler, get packed. I want you in Sitka for face-time with anyone Samar turns up.

RED'S SAFE HOUSE

TV : “He’s been on the FBI’s ten most wanted list for years, but authorities may be finally closing in on notorious international criminal Raymond “Red” Reddington. Acting on an anonymous tip, police arrested a man they say is a close associate of Reddington’s and who may be able to lead them to the elusive concierge of crime.” Television clicks off

RED : Was all this really necessary?
LIZ : Tell you what. How about I find someone to follow you around 24/7 and see how you like it?
RED : You know as well as I this has nothing to do with being followed. This is about being found out. You’re hiding something. Why else risk my capture?
LIZ : Ezra’s not gonna talk.
RED : I know that, but you didn’t. And now you’re holding him in a cement box under a no-contact order. Congratulations, Lizzy. You’ve plugged the hole, but the dam will fail. It’s only a matter of time.

KINCAID'S HOUSE

Skye is giving her grown son Matthew a bubble bath. Music

SKYE : You just know we’re gonna wear this old thing out if we keep playing it. How about “Wheels on the bus”? Okay. Peter’s coming tomorrow. He’s bringing a new friend for you to play with. isn’t that great?
MATTHEW : Ho-ho-ho!

LIZ : Chung disappeared this morning. Somebody shot the agent surveilling him with a tranquilizer dart.
RESSLER : Do you think he might have been abducted?
LIZ : Possibly. We’re not sure. He might have fled. We flagged his passport. We’re tracking all international flights. We’ll keep you posted. At this point, the closest former Animal Underground members that we could find are in Anchorage.
RESSLER : Any prospects?
LIZ : Outside of one arrest for possession 15 years ago, they look clean.
SAMAR : The Ranch.
LIZ : Oh, yeah. And make a run out to Igaluk Ranch. It’s the former location of their commune. Property was picked up at auction after the big bust by Wendigo, LLC.
RESSLER : I’ll check it out.

Hangs up

SAMAR : The two vics were skinned antemortem. Presuming Sitka is the dumping site –
LIZ : They were transported alive.
SAMAR : You think sedated?
LIZ : No doubt, but, still, customs, security – Someone would have – But, plus, how did they get onto a commercial flight without proper documentation?
SAMAR : Unless you don’t fly commercial. Homeland Security is loathe to inconvenience the rich and powerful.

LIZ : Pull information on private jets departing the same days our victims were abducted. Crosscheck tail numbers. See if you can find a pattern.

RESSLER : About the former owners, the Animal Underground. You heard of them?

ARAM : Paris two hours after Batouala disappears, a chartered Citation , CJ3S, leaves a private airstrip outside the city. Sao Paulo another Citation departs 45 minutes – after Alejandro Gomez is abducted.
LIZ : Same pilots?
ARAM : Well, I got two different names here, but both check out as bogus, so I’d say yes.
SAMAR : He’s comfortable behind the stick of a Citation. Why change horses?
ARAM : Right. So I checked local airports and got a third hit.

Keys clacking

ARAM : Another citation, which departed yesterday from Westchester at 5:12 p.m.
SAMAR : Chung. Did they file a flight plan?
ARAM : Bogus. Uh, all over the map – Uh, Tokyo, Dubai, Paris.
LIZ : Who chartered the planes?
ARAM : Three separate jets, three separate companies. One domiciled in Oslo, uh, the second in Belgium, uh, the third in South Africa. But they all share a common corporate parent Or should I say a common corporate “second uncle cousin sister once removed”?

RED'S CAR

LIZ : What do you know about a company called Wendigo, LLC?
RED : Wendigo. What have you found that connects him the cartel?
LIZ : Not sure. All we know is Wendigo controls chartered jets used in the abductions and they own a piece of property in the same area where the bodies were dumped in the ocean Sitka, Alaska. Used to be a commune for a group called Animal Underground. Ressler went up there to ask some questions. He’s fallen out of contact. Anchorage division’s scrambling HRT, and Samar and I are set to rendezvous with them in Juneau.In the meantime, if you can dig up any names behind Wendigo, RED : Lizzy, be careful up there.

RED : There’s been a change of plans.

Grunting : Chung and Ressler wake up in cages. Music

RESSLER : What the hell is that music?

Ressler’s hands are shaking

RESSLER : I’m not a junkie.

SKYE : I’ve been trying to reach you for six hours.
GEOFF : You know this is when I meditate.
SKYE : A man from the FBI showed up asking questions. Peter had to take him out.
GEOFF : What?
SKYE : He had no choice. He saw Chung.
GEOFF : Is he dead?
SKYE : Well, he will be. We gave him to Matthew.
GEOFF : Okay, listen to me. This time can’t be like the others – No skinning, no stuffing, no evidence. Tell Peter. He’ll know what to do.
SKYE : Matthew won’t like that.
GEOFF : I don’t care if Matthew likes it. I should have tipped off the police when he began his little hobby.
SKYE : And have him locked up in some hellhole? He wouldn’t have lasted a month, and you know it. He’s a child. He’s your child.
GEOFF : I know that.

Breathes sharply

GEOFF : Tell Peter to call me when it’s done.

He hangs up and sees Red in his apartment

RED : Namaste, Geoff.

KINCAID'S PROPERTY

LIZ : Any intelligence on who’s up there?
SEARCH TEAM GUY : Two confirmed: Rosemary, aka “Skye,” Kincaid and her son, Peter.
GUY 2 : The woman checks out as an associate of Animal Underground.
GUY : Yeah, a local girl got knocked up by one of their members, a fella they called ” Ace.” Her son Pete is an expert guide and tracker.
LIZ : Anybody else?
GUY : There could be. Word is, Rosie was pregnant again 40 years ago and insisted on giving birth up at the Ranch – refused to come in town. Social services paid her a visit about eight months in, tried to convince her to change her mind and reported that she was no longer with child. People have talked hunters and whatnot. And there’s been sightings of somebody or “something” else.
LIZ : “Something?”
GUY : The rumor is it’s Rosie’s younger son.

RESSLER : Hey.

GEOFF'S APARTMENT

RED : There you are – Sean Salter. You went by the name “Ace” back then. You left Animal Underground two years before the Sitka Seven killings and subsequent trials. Lucky, that. But, then, you’ve always had a talent for well-timed exits. Well, it seems, Ace, there’s still some freaks up there living in the woods, skinning people and dumping them in the Bay.
GEOFF : Poachers, not people, responsible for the decimation of hundreds of wild and endangered species.
RED : Yes. Horrific. And if that was your endgame, I’d be writing you another sizable contribution to keep up the good work. But that isn’t the endgame, is it, Geoff? You see, before I got involved with your Foundation, I ran a comprehensive background check. All your business interests, corporations. Among them, a rather innocuous shell called “Wendigo, LLC.” Everything looked fine. Shame on me. Turns out Wendigo holds controlling stock in a small but lucrative concern called Emerson-Concorde Imports that you recently identified to a lovely young friend of mine as a front for the Mombasa Cartel.
GEOFF : Why would I kill my own people?
RED : You’re a businessman. As long as you were killing off the competition, you took the opportunity to clear out deadwood in your own operation. The evidence of your guilt is convoluted but irrefutable. I simply cannot fathom the journey, the moral detours necessary to change a man who cherished all creatures great and small into one who profits from their slaughter.
GEOFF : My motives have never been about profits. I have more money than I’ll ever need. And there’s been no journey, no detours. I’m the same guy I’ve always been – I’m a conservationist. And as you pointed out, I’m a businessman. I understand the law of supply and demand. As long as the market exists – and it will always exist – there will be people willing to meet the demand. It can’t be stopped. It can be controlled.
RED : A natural monopoly.
GEOFF : Exactly. These cartels are completely out of control. But through a natural monopoly, the supply curve can be managed. The short-term demand can be met without threatening the long-term survival of the species.
RED : Geoff, that was breathtaking – an operatic perversion of righteous intent. But your strategy, no matter how noble the rhetoric, is betrayed and, inevitably, defined by your actions.
This isn’t about conservation. It’s about consolidation. We are what we do, Ace.
GEOFF : What do you want?
RED : A list identifying every member and operative in the Mombasa Cartel, their business entities, and distribution networks.
GEOFF : Or?
RED : Or I shoot you... here, now.

KINCAID'S PROPERTY

Where all people are stuffed. Matthew talks them 

MATTHEW KINCAID : Hey, Alejandro. That’s a real sweet song.

MATTHEW: What do you think, Joe? Don’t expect him to let you off. Yeah. Me, too.

Clattering. Ressler has been sitting in group. Matthew notices him moving. They engage and struggle. Ressler stabs Matthew and runs off into the woods

MATTHEW : Mama.

GEOFF : There it is. That’s everything – the whole cartel.
 RED : You know, 29 years ago in Sierra Leone, there was a farmer named Samwel Zuma who had the audacity to identify several low-level Mombasa operatives to local authorities. The cartel massacred the entire family. All but the youngest son. He was sold to a local ring of flesh peddlers. The majority of children in those circumstances don’t last more than nine months. He survived eight years. He was 14 when I found him. Too old, too tall, too angry and dangerous to be of any further value. He was left to die, chained to a standpipe in the basement of a squalid brothel in Nairobi. Branded, burned, barely alive. So I took him. Made him well, saw to his education. He graduated university with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature. He speaks four languages fluently and can get by in a half a dozen more. He is ... splendid. His name is Dembe – Dembe Zuma.
DEMBE : Raymond, don’t. That was then. It serves no purpose to kill him now.
RED : You see that, Geoff? That is what a good man does. That is what separates men like him from men like you...

Red shoots Geoff

RED : ... and me.
